I did not buy a book yesterday. I finished a book and I was at a bookstore but I didn’t buy anything. Which is good because I knew that it was the day before New Release Tuesday and I would be buying books. If you told me that I would be going to four different bookstores I’d tell you that sounded unlikely and foolish. But I did. I shall also discuss a galley or two that I assume I can disclose … I have not received instructions I can’t.The day started on a super high as I was approved for a digital galley of Noggin by John Corey Whaley. I immediately started reading it. To hell with the book club selection, to hell with friends’ recommendations. It is a safe bet that there are no books that could possibly distract me from finishing Noggin… although it’s possible Grasshopper Jungle could.
As I was leaving the house on an errand of mercy I noticed a package outside the door and saw to my surprise a galley that I had requested at BEA. The Book of Matt by Stephen Jimenez. This is a book I am apprehensive about. It’s scheduled to be released fifteen years after Matthew Shepard’s death. I’ve met his mother Judy, and I’m rather fond of her. I’m hoping that this book is not a cheap attempt to capitalize or scandalize. I keep on staring at the book, wondering what the author wrote and fearing the worst.
There are blurbs on the back cover. But none from Judy.
OKAY HAPPY THOUGHTS. Puppies. Kitties. Bunnies.
When I visited Mrs. Nelson’s today, I did get a copy of Tom Angleberger’s latest Origami Yoda book, The Surprise Attack of Jabba the Puppet. I will probably quickly finish this book and donate it.
Mrs. Nelson’s did not have a copy of Wise Young Fool by Sean Beaudoin so I ended up at a Barnes and Noble in Glendora. They had a copy of it on the shelf so I picked it up.
Then I went to a local independent bookstore that I will not name by name. They didn’t have Wise Young Fool. They didn’t have The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns. So I felt ok about buying from a chain bookstore. I’m an impatient person. If I was patient … I would order online. New Release Tuesday is really about the immediate gratification.
